40sEdith Feinberg Resnick, ’48, MA’75, was one of the eight honorees presented with the Eight Over Eighty award by Jewish Senior Life, an agency of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. Edith is also a past recipient of the Leonard N. Simons History Award of the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan. She has been an active board member of the Jewish Family Service for two decades. Along with her husband, Donn, she and the family endowed the Resnick Family Nature Center at Camp Michigania. M

50sRaymond Lezak, ’51, MA’52, was recognized for his leadership in establishing the Ohio Council of Audiology, now the Ohio Academy of Audiology, the first such program in the U.S. He received the Founders Award and a life membership. Ray, retired and a professional volunteer, lives in Shaker Heights, Ohio. M

H. Edsel Buchanan, ’52, MA’53, also known as “Tex,” thanks to his hometown of Amarillo, Texas, is the only three-time NCAA trampoline champion in gymnastics. At the age of 82, he is still an avid U-M supporter. M

Robert Miller, ’52, MSE’56, PhD’59, and his wife, Sally Colberg Miller, ’54, are enjoying retirement in New Jersey. They stay connected to the University by attending alumni events and also enjoy visiting museums and gardens when possible.

Richard Young, ’53, JD’60, a retired Navy rear admiral, has been appointed Colorado state chairman of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a Department of Defense Agency. Dick and his wife of 55 years, Loraine Moote Young, ’54, live in Denver. Two of their daughters graduated from U-M, and their oldest grandson is currently a student. M

Gertrude Couch, PhD’54, was presented with a certificate from the U of M Club of Washington, D.C., recognizing her 100th birthday. Her daughter, Barbara Bird, ’60, and great-grandson, Matthew Bird, a U-M student, were both on hand for the occasion.

Lawrence Brown, JD’55, has moved his law office from Westport, Connecticut, to his home in Wilton, Connecticut. He is still working in the field of admiralty and international law as he approaches his 80th birthday. M

Lynn Demoss, ’56, has returned from his seventh extended term of service in Africa. Lynn, his wife, and their two 13-year-old grandsons spent three months in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where Lynn taught at Katanga Methodist University and provided logistical support for the Centennial Celebration of Methodism in the Congo. Eugene Moore, ’57, JD’60, has returned to Beier Howlett, P.C. of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, the firm where his career began in1961. Eugene served for more than four decades on the bench of the Oakland County Probate Court in Michigan. He was elected to six consecutive terms, including three as chief judge.

Bruce Evans, MBA’58, is a full-time professor of strategic management at the University of Dallas College of Business.Bruce continues to teach because evaluations by MBA students remain strong and because teaching allows him to realize his longtime dream of making a contribution. He credits excellent preparation, including his time at Michigan, for allowing him to thrive in this position.

Michael Bernstein, ’59, of Bond, Schoeneck & King, was named to the 2011 “Best Lawyers in America” list in the labor and employment law section. Michael works in the New York City office and represents management in every facet of labor and employment law.

John Riddle, ’59, one of the founders of PORTopera, was the recipient of a National Opera Trustee Recognition Award from OPERA America, a national service organization. The award recognizes exemplary leadership, generosity, and audience-building efforts. Jack helped start the local opera company in 1994 in Portland, Maine. M

60sBarbara Bird, ’60, was named the International Clown of the Year by Clowns of America International. Known as “Sparky,” “Mumzee the Clown,” and “Addy-Tude,” she is a founding member of the Electric City Clowns in Schenectady, New York, and a founding member of Red Nose Response. She was the special guest of Clowns of America International at its annual convention in Anaheim, California, in April. She is a consulting nurse practitioner and resides in Clifton Park, New York. Lawrence Wright, ’61, of Muskegon, Michigan, was re-elected to the board of trustees for Muskegon Community College.His fellow trustees have chosen him to serve as the board chairperson for the next two years. M

Eric Brown, ’62, JD’65, senior counsel in Miller Canfield law firm’s Kalamazoo, Michigan, office, was re-elected to the board of directors and executive committee of BC/ CAL/KAL Inland Port Development Corporation, which operates Foreign Trade Zone 43. Theodore Tanase, ’63, received Seattle Business Magazine’s Leaders in Health Care Outstanding Achievement in Health Care Information Technology award. The company he started in 1999, Total Living Choices, develops Web-based programs for families, hospitals, and post-acute care providers.Their programs help those who can no longer live at home alone and increase the efficiency of hospitals discharging patients to post-acute care providers. Ellis Deibler, MA’65, PhD’73, has been an international translation consultant for Wycliffe Bible Translators for several decades. He has translated the Bible, taught and lectured on translation principles, led workshops, and checked translations in 19 countries. He has written and co-written 15 books in the translation field, including “A Translator’s Translation of the New Testament,” and has five more books in process. M

Gary Desmond, ’66, president of AR7, will continue to lead the Denver office as managing principal as AR7 merges with NAC|Architecture. Gary has been working with NAC for the past two years, exploring cultural alignment and refining all operational aspects that are resulting in a seamless merger. M

Lee Hornberger, ’66, JD’68, spoke on ethics in mediation as the featured speaker at the Community Mediation Services annual dinner and awards ceremony in Gaylord, Michigan, in October. He practices with the arbitration and mediation office of Lee Hornberger and is a past president of the Grand Traverse-Leelanau-Antrim Bar Association, a Michigan Civil Rights Commission hearing referee, and a Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians hearing officer.

Terry Silver, ’66, MDRES’74, professor emeritus of radiology at U-M, received the 2010 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center’s Alumni Association. The award, bestowed annually, honors Terry’s distinguished service to American medicine and recognizes his significant contributions to the welfare of mankind. M

Daniel Koop, ’67, retired after a career with the U.S. Coast Guard, Corning Glass Works, and Urschel Laboratories, a manufacturer of industrial processing equipment where he served for 37 years as regional manager. He will remain in Plano, Texas, with his wife of 42 years, Myra. He plays on an awardwinning Senior Olympic basketball team. M

Richard Zuckerman, ’67, is a partner in Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn law firm’s litigation department and the chair of its white collar crime practice group. He was reappointed to the State Bar of Michigan’s Judicial Qualifications Committee for the sixth year. Bob Breck, ’69, celebrated 40 years in broadcasting in February. He is certified by the American Meteorological Society as a broadcast meteorologist. Bob has spent the last 33 years at WVUE-TV FOX 8 in New Orleans as chief meteorologist. M

John Turner, MS’69, former assistant secretary of state for oceans, international environment and scientific affairs, and third-generation Wyoming rancher, received the National Museum of Wildlife Art’s prestigious Rungius Medal. Created in 1988, the award recognizes individuals who have made a significant addition to the public’s awareness of wildlife and the habitat necessary for its survival. John’s accomplishments include establishing 55 new national wildlife refuges.

Phyllis Wang Wise, MA’69, PhD’72, University of Washington interim president, has been selected by the Asian Pacific Fund, a community foundation, as the recipient of the fifth annual Chang-Lin Tien Education Leadership Award. The award recognizes Asian American academic leaders whose work embraces the ideals of Tien, the first Asian American to head a major American research university as chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley.

70sWilliam Hatcher, ’71, MA’72, MM’76, is the owner of Wineworks, the producer of the Wineworks 2008 Oregon Pinot Noir. This wine was recently ranked No. 75 on the Wine Spectator’s list of the top 100 wines of 2010. M

Martha Nield, ’71, was elected by her peers as chairperson of the Presbyterian Villages of Michigan board of directors. The volunteer board provides PVM with direction and advice and helping set goals and objectives for the organization to carry out its mission of serving seniors. She lives in Northville, Michigan, and was named Northville Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 2001 for her community work. M

Eve Klothen, ’72, received a 2011 Outstanding Service Award from Philadelphia VIP, an organization committed to providing community access to justice and legal services. Eve is the assistant dean for pro bono and public interest programs at the Rutgers School of Law–Camden. Zim Olson, ’74, of Zim Mathematics (www.zimmathematics.com), participated in the Joint Mathematics Meeting in New Orleans in January. He had an exhibit during the conference and distributed 365 DVDs and Cds summarizing his mathematics. Thomas Cavalier, MA’76, JD’82, was elected as chair of the litigation section of the State Bar of Michigan for the 2010-11 term. He is a member of Barris, Sott, Denn & Driker.

Jay Kennedy, ’76, JD’79, has been named a Michigan Super Lawyer and a top lawyer by Dbusiness magazine. His primary practice area with the Warner-Norcross law fi rm is corporate tax planning. M

Dan A. Waxman, MD’77, is the president of America’s Blood Centers, the association of independent community blood centers.He serves as the chief medical officer of the Indiana Blood Center and clinical professor Of pathology at the Indiana University Medical Center.

Dennis D’Hondt, ’78, DDS’82, was named a top dentist for the greater Detroit area in 2008 and 2009 by HOUR Detroit magazine. He has an offi ce in Frasier, Michigan, and resides in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan, with his wife, Mariann. In the fall, all three of their children will be U-M students. M

Halley Faust, MPH’78, was named president-elect of the American College of Preventative Medicine at its annual conference in San Antonio. He will assume the presidency in 2013. Halley works in bioethics and venture capital from his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is also a clinical associate professor of family and community medicine at the University of New Mexico and on the university’s Preventive Medicine Residency Advisory Committee. M

Linda Hutchins, ’78, a gallery artist represented by Pulliam Gallery in Portland, Oregon, had a solo exhibit at Oregon State University’s Fairbanks Gallery in April. The exhibit, “Through Line,” included new drawings as well as sewn organza sculptures And typewritten works. Linda has received two fellowships from the Oregon Arts Commission and grants from the Regional Arts & Culture Council and just completed her third artist residency at Caldera. M

Daniel Fenech, ’79, is included in “The Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year 2010.” Daniel is a professional cartoonist and full regular member of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists. His work is distributed internationally and in national, regional, and local newspapers. Daniel also does pro bono work for organizations that promote animal welfare and math and science education. He lives with his wife, Linda, in the Ann Arbor area.

Daniel Tukel, ’79, JD’82, was inducted as a fellow into the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. Daniel, an attorney and shareholder with Butzel Long law fi rm, was one of only three Michigan attorneys selected this year.

80sSaulius Mikalonis, ’80, a senior environmental attorney in the Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, office of Plunkett Cooney law Firm, was appointed vice chair for the American Bar Association’s Section of Environment, Energy and Resources Climate Change, Sustainable Development and Ecosystems Committee. Joseph Fazio, ’81, was re-elected to serve a two-year term as a managing director at Miller Canfield law firm. Joseph serves as chair of the managing directors and is a principal in the real estate group in the Ann Arbor office. Evan Raynes, ’81, MA’83, has joined Roetzel law firm’s Washington, D.C., office.Evan has extensive experience as an intellectual property lawyer, including several years as a partner at a large intellectual property law firm. She also directs activities of the hospital’s off-site laboratories. M

David Kershaw, ‘84, MDRES’93, the division director of pediatric nephrology at the University of Michigan, joined the board of the Nephcure Foundation. The foundation aims to help science unlock the biological mechanisms that cause nephrotic syndrome and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, both kidney diseases. David has published more than 40 research articles. M

Amy Krause, ’84, was appointed to the Michigan Court of Appeals in November.She and her husband, Kurt, live in Lansing, Michigan. M

David Palumbo, ’84, is the chief information officer of National Heritage Academies and vice chairman of the board of directors of One Hen Inc., an educational nonprofit. Throughout his career, David has developed an expertise in both technology and education. Before joining NHA, he served in a variety of roles with CTB/McGraw Hill, Sapient Corporation, and WOWIO and was a tenured faculty member in the department of instructional technology at the University of Houston.

She is the past president of the Michigan Judges Association and was the circuit court representative on the state’s Community Corrections Board. M

Michael Lisi, JD’86, a partner in Honigman Miller Schwartz law firm’s Intellectual property group, served as a panelist at Protecting Your Intellectual Property in the Global Marketplace, a seminar of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and U.S. Commercial Service. Jordan Wertlieb, ’86, has been promoted to executive vice president of Hearst Television, based at the company’s New York City headquarters. Previously, he was president and general manager of WBAL-TV, Hearst’s NBC affiliate in Baltimore. In his new role, Jordan has management oversight responsibility for a portion of the 29 Hearst TV stations around the country and will assist on various corporate matters. M

Michael Frank, ’87, president of Aquarius Capital, has been elected president of the Actuarial Society of Greater New York. Michael served as chairperson of the continuing education committee for the ASNY from 2007 to 2009. He holds other section council positions for the Society of Actuaries and participates on a variety of industry task forces. M

David Owsiany, ’87, is the newest member of the Ohio Police & Fire Pension Fund board of trustees after being appointed as an investment expert member. David brings a broad array of skills, including finance, executive management, and budget experience. He is executive director of the Ohio Dental Association. M

Takeshi Yamada, MFA’87, has had more than 550 international art exhibitions of his paintings and sculptures, including in Spain, the Netherlands, Japan, and the United States. He has given lectures and taught at more than 40 educational institutions internationally and has written and published 22 books.

90sDarrious Hilmon, ’90, has assumed the position of chief development and marketing officer at Youth Guidance, a Chicago social service agency. Darrious will serve as a member of the executive management team, which is responsible for strategic planning and execution of Youth Guidance’s individual, corporate, and foundation fund development campaigns as well as the agency’s marketing and communications initiatives.

John Kanan, ’90, a partner in Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn law, served as moderator for a panel discussion on legal issues arising in cross-border transactions between the U.S. and Asia. The event was hosted by the Asian Pacific American Chamber of Commerce. John focuses his practice on counseling publicly and privately held businesses, their owners, and their directors, and serves as outside general counsel for companies in a variety of industries. M

Timothy Essington, ’91, is a recipient of a 2011 Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation. The fellowship is awarded annually to global leaders who are working to preserve and protect the world’s oceans and marine species. Each fellow receives a $150,000 grant, allocated over three years, to complete an original, research-based marine conservation project.

Todd Hall, ’91, runs a manufacturing company with 160 employees for his real job. He also sings in a heavy metal band, Jack Starr’s Burning Starr, which has played a few shows in Germany over the last couple of years. The band’s CD was released there and in the U.S. on Amazon.com. M

Angela Ascencio-Mindlin, ’92, and husband Kristopher Mindlin announce the birth of their son, Lorenzo, on September 21. Lorenzo joined big sisters Elena, 2, and Marisela, 1, just in time for football Saturdays. M

Craig Cowden, ’92, has been promoted to senior vice president of network engineering and operations for Bright House Networks. In this role, Craig is responsible for the architecture, engineering, and operational support for all voice and data services, including commercial services and cell backhaul. He also supports Bright House Networks’ strategic planning and implementation of wireless initiatives.

Rod Loewenthal, ’92, a financial adviser at Merrill Lynch, was recognized on the list of 2011 “America’s Top 1,000 Advisors: State-by-State” in the February 21 issue of Barron’s magazine. This is the third consecutive year for Rod. He resides with his wife, Tracy, and their three children in Highland Park, Illinois.

In this role, Stuart assumes responsibility for corporate oversight of information technology, human resources, marketing, general services, and hospitality operations. Ann Marie Lipinski, ’94, Pulitzer Prizewinning journalist and former editor of the Chicago Tribune, has been named curator of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard. Lipinski, the first woman to head the foundation since it was founded in 1938, is responsible for managing its fellowship program, conferences, seminars, and journalism awards. She also oversees all Nieman programs and publications, as well as specialized reporting fellowships.

Greg Marion, ’94, is on the national board of directors of the Scleroderma Foundation. He previously served as the president of the foundation’s greater Chicago chapter. He has been committed to the foundation and its mission due to his mother’s diagnosis of systemic scleroderma.Greg is also the vice president of protection products at the United Services Automobile Association, headquartered in San Antonio.

Austin Ratner, ’94, is the winner of the Jewish Book Council’s 2011 Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature in fiction for his debut novel, “The Jump Artist” (Bellevue Literary Press, 2009).

Kevin Rutkowski, ’94, had a big week in early December. On the 4th, he completed his master’s degree in engineering management at the University of Texas. Just Four days later, he was named the 2010 Catapult Systems Austin employee of the year. Catapult Systems is a national Microsoft-focused IT consulting company that provides application development, enterprise solutions, and infrastructure services. M

Rudhir Patel, ’99, was named a principal in Fish & Richardson law firm’s IP litigation group in Washington, D.C. Overall, 16 attorneys were elevated to principal across the firm’s 11 offices. Rudhir will continue to focus his practice on patent litigation in the areas of consumer electronics, computer hardware, industrial machines, integrated circuits, and semiconductors.

Senghor Reid, ’99, a visual arts teacher at Cass Technical High School in Detroit, Achieved National Board Certification in 2010. The voluntary assessment program is designed to develop, recognize, and retain accomplished teachers. The certification is achieved through a performance-based assessment that typically takes one to three years. While state licensing systems set basic requirements to teach in each state, National Board Certified teachers have successfully demonstrated advanced teaching knowledge, skills, and practices.
