FEATURE 24 ARTISTS TAKE TO THE STREETS – AND GARDENS AND LAKES – IN SUCCESSFUL WINTER PARK PAINT OUT BY DIXIE TATE What do you get when you give 24 of Florida’s top-fl ight plein air painters the run of Winter Park’s great outdoors for the better part of a week with their only assignment to paint whatever strikes their fancy? You get museum walls fi lled with stunning artistic interpretations of some of the city’s most idyllic spots – its canals and lakes, its parks and landmarks, and, perhaps most fetching of all, the lushly landscaped grounds of the Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens, outfi tted in its best fl owery fi nery for its debut as home to the fi rst Winter Park Paint Out. T aking advantage of a day without school, Megan Killer and mom Lisa of Longwood, who had planned only to tour the museum and grounds, discovered an added bonus: artists busy painting among the splashes of color and towering trees. “They’re really good,” said Megan, 12. “I wish I could paint.” A group of inquisitive preschoolers from First Congregational Church of Winter Park had the unexpected pleasure of talking about their favorite things to draw with artist Berto Ortega, who happily engaged the youngsters in conversation.
