DEMOCRATS TURN THEIR BACKS ON CUBANS’ CRIES FOR FREEDOM T he dam may finally break in Cuba. On July 11, tens of thou-sands of Cubans took to the streets for the first time since the 1990s to try to bring an end to the suffering caused by the communist regime that has ruled their country for more than six decades. Living condi-tions in the island nation, which were already miserable before, have only 48 • AMAC Magazine been made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic. Families are now deprived of basic goods and services as a result of the economic crisis currently plaguing the island. According to official figures, the Cuban economy contracted nearly 11 percent in 2020. In the first half of 2021, the economy has shrunk another 2 percent when compared to the same time period as least year. The takeaway is clear — communism has once again failed. But not every-one has drawn that logical conclu-sion. Democrats in Washington have been split in their reaction to Cubans’ cries for freedom.
